People by the 1000âs have been laid off and are still searching for jobs after 1 or 2 years. Itâs an issue, but it doesnât have the hiring stigma it once did. Now try to imagine not working for the past 10 or 15 years. Thatâs not a work gap. That a career restart, if in fact itâs not simply a career launch. This situation happens most frequently with women who have delayed their career to start and raise a family. However, this is not the sole domain of women, as I have known of men who have had to take years off for raising a family or caring for aging parents. If you are in this position of restarting or launching a career in your middle years, I know you are concerned about your prospects. There are real issues; and some real thought that you have to put into plotting out your career. Here are the issues and solutions for you to consider: Not knowing what you would do. This is a problem for most people launching a career. Itâs just that now you have a few more considerations in life that you didnât previously have. You may have children demands, mortgages and location restrictions to add into the decision. Solution: Please donât launch a job search without getting clear about your career. You will have a muddled mess; you wonât like the results. Review the next points on the issues you have to consider. Just know that you have work to do to figure out your career direction; you will need some time and resources to get yourself prepared. Education is dated. For many people who launch a career following college, there comes a point where the experience outweighs the value of your education. The experience is more specific, current and relevant. What you learned in college, while good, has a shelf life. If you obtained a degree and havenât amassed much, if any, work experience, you have a job search problem. Solution: Depending on what career you have selected, you will most likely need to go back to school. I would spend time with a college advisor to discuss the best course of action. If you are starting a business, this issue goes away. You donât need a degree or a âfreshâ degree to start a business. But for most employment, you may be considering, unless pursuing unskilled labor, you will have to bolster your education. Work is dated. Similar to the education, the relevancy of work gets dated as well. To help make this point: The general guideline for how much work history you put on a resume is to stop somewhere around 15 years. If you havenât been employed for over 10 years, much has changed and is not going to impress prospective employers. Itâs almost like not having any experience. Solution: Volunteer. I know I sound like a broken record about volunteering, but itâs the one true untapped resource for a job seeker. There is everything a standard business would have in a non-profit, only they canât pay for many of those functions. If youâre willing to speak with a non-profit group about their needs and your career direction, you may find yourself able to learn something new. It will also be immensely helpful to the non-profit group. This work experience is up to date and good for your resume. A second solution is to seek temp work doing something in or close to your new career. Restart is hard. Everyone I have seen in this situation finds it daunting and difficult to shift gears. It is a change in lifestyle, as well as a personal change. There is nothing that will go untouched when restarting a career. Solution: Donât try to tackle the elephant! Create a plan for making a decision. Then execute on those things to arrive at a good career decision. Next create a preparation plan, whether it is getting another degree, certification, degree refresh or whatever. This will be the first point where you will start making bigger changes in your life, so list those in your prep plan. Most likely you will start to have a routine schedule you will need to work around. Many people facing this change try to wrap their arms around all of the parts at once. Break your actions down into manageable parts. When faced with restarting a career, the best attitude to take is that you are starting a journey. There will be many steps along the way, a few curves and bumps, but the scenery will be great. You will arrive at your new career at a time that is perfect for you. Improving Your Graduate School Application On your application, great test scores and grades speak for themselves, and everyone knows how important those are. But, there are a lot of other factors that can boost your application and ultimately your chances for acceptance. Most grad schools require a transcript, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and admissions essay(s). Make sure you include all these components, or you may be automatically rejected. Transcripts: Its not all about your GPA. Grad schools want to see a challenging undergrad curriculum. So, if you earn a 4.0 with a bunch of easy classes like The History of the Alphabet 101, you will rank lower than a student with a 3.6 GPA from harder classes. Performing well in difficult classes shows grad schools that youre prepared for the next step. But, if youre looking for a number, most schools want to see at least a 3.5 GPA in a difficult curriculum. You wont include your transcript in your application, but you must have your undergrad schools registrar office send it. This can take over two weeks; so try to request it as early as possible. A late transcript could disqualify you. GRE: The GRE is designed to be the one common test among all applicants, making it the easiest comparable factor. But, the GRE may not be as important to grad school admissions as the ACT / SATwere to undergrad admissions. A private tutorcan help you prepare for the entire process. In August 2011, the GRE changed its scoring system (Verbal Reasoning/Quantitative Reasoning are now scored on a 130-170 scale), and its content to better reflect the type of thinking students will need for grad schools. Currently, there is no new data on grad schools GRE requirements for admissions. The Educational Testing Service, the creator and administer of the GRE, released score percentiles based on the new GRE scoring. A competitive GRE score at top grad schools would be in the top 15 percent, meaning you will need at least around a 160 on each section. A score of 150 is considered to be average. Some schools may even require a GRE Subject Test, which is an additional test in a specific discipline (e.g., psychology). But, if you are pursuing a specific major at grad school or just completed an undergrad major, you should take the corresponding subject test. It will show grad schools that you can specialize in a specific area, and they may place more weight to it than the rest of the GRE. Research: Prior research experience is a significant factor in grad school admissions. It has become so popular among undergrads that if you dont have a strong research project, it will raise red flags. Technically, its not required, but to get into an elite school, it is basically a necessity. Now, its more about the quality of your research project as opposed to simply having one. The best way to create a credible research project is to partner with a professor, start early and commit to it. Some students even seek out companies or other professionals to comment on their research, and others (the ones who really commit to it) get it published. Letter of recommendation: You have to be more than numbers to get into grad school. Admissions will often set cut off points for grades and GRE scores. Then, they will look at your letters of recommendation, essays, etc. Strong letters of recommendation are directly related to your relationships with professors or business contacts. Again, having worked with a professor on a research project can help you earn a much better recommendation. Try to really connect with a professor through a research project and he/she will remember your commitment. If you had a prestigious internship, a letter from your supervisor about your duties and abilities can also be impressive. But, only include letters from professors or supervisors from internships. Also, try to provide your professors/mentors with enough background information on you. That will make their job easier and the letter better. Admission essay (personal statement): Write your essay through your readers eyes. Think about what they want to see from a student and tailor your essay around that. Dont just explain why you want to go to that particular school, but instead write about how the education you will receive there will help you achieve your academic and career goals. Explain why youre a perfect fit for the school, and be as specific as possible write about rewards/honors the school has earned, and what those mean to you as a prospective student. Try to pair your academic accolades or skills with the programs at your prospective school Interview: This is not part of the traditional application, but finalists will likely be asked to do an interview. At that point, the school is prepared to accept you, and the decision may rest on your interview. You may interview with professors, students or admissions counselors. It may be one-on-one or in a group setting. Most interviews will last 30-60 minutes. What grad schools really want to see is a person behind all your test scores and academic accolades. They want to see if youre well-spoken and articulate. But, try not to dominate the interview, and make sure you know everything you can about the school. Maintain a two-way dialogue by asking thoughtful questions. But, you need to convey that you are very interested in the school, and plan to use its programs and education to succeed.

Positive and zero exponents The exponent is the number or value to which a variable or number is raised. The exponent usually written as am. Here a is the base value and m is the exponent. The exponent can be a positive, negative or equal to zero. The exponent tell the number or times the base number needs to be multiplied. If m is a positive number: am = a x a x a x a..a (m times). If m is equal to zero: a0 = 1. (Any value to the power zero is equal to 1.) Example 1: Evaluate the value of the expression: (0.3)4? Solution: Here the exponent expression given is (0.3)4. The base number is 0.3 and the power to which the number is raised is 4. The base number needs to ne multiplied 4 times. This gives (0.3)4 = 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.3 Here there is a decimal number in 0.3 so multiplying four times has the final answer will consist of four decimal number. Introvert Whisperer / The Good Personâs Guide to Office Politics - Introvert Whisperer The Good Personâs Guide to Office Politics Like a lot of people, I used to think Office Politics was only about people who played dirty with each other. They were people who would smile and be friendly while figuring out how to undermine your efforts and make you look bad. The rest of humanity did their best to stay under the radar while the mud-slinging was taking place. With all of the nuclear fallout, itâs often difficult to not be impacted in some way. I discovered that, like many things in our society, we tend to notice the most outrageous, obnoxious examples of something and ignore the rest. Is It Possible That Office Politics Is Not Always Bad? In a word: YES! Itâs important to understand that âpolitics,â no matter if itâs office politics, exists all the time whenever you assemble a group of people. Iâm sure thatâs a shocking revelation. Letâs look at what Politics is, why itâs important to understand and how you can play it well without turning into a person people avoid. I think youâll change your opinion of it. In its simplest form, office politics is about building relationships in order to achieve some kind of end result. Itâs how things get done and itâs done 100% of the time on all jobs. Our jobs are always dependent on our interactions with others. Also, when I say âjobsâ or work, it doesnât have to mean paid work, either. If you belong to a neighborhood association, parent-teacher organization or volunteer, all of those things have no income but there is still politics going on. Any time you get a group of people together, a dynamic soon forms. Generally, it starts with a person seeking to influence others to do something. That isnât a bad thing most of the time. People need to sell others on their ideas most of the time in order to get them to give their resources. Those resources can include money, time and skills. In the workplace, we influence people to support and take action on everything from helping with a project to promotions. In other words, Office Politics is a constant. Once you start paying attention, most of the time Office Politics is taking place and when it is positive we either donât notice it or call it something nice like âgroup harmony.â What Makes This Important to You? Office Politics happens all the time and it happens as a result of the relationships each person forms. Some people think that all they should have to do is show up, do their work and go home. They think they shouldnât have to befriend people at work. Those people are the ones who are most damaged by office politics, because no one at work is there to support them and that is a huge problem. You canât function like that. No one is autonomous, ever. You have to think of yourself like a cog in a watch, each cog interconnecting with others in harmony to make the watch tell time. If you arenât âmeshingâ with others, you create problems for them and you. Sooner or later, you will feel like youâre working in a hostile work environment. Itâs almost a primitive reaction that when a person doesnât fit in a group, the group wants the outlier to either integrate or leave. It may seem like people are then playing dirty office politics with you as the brunt of what is transpiring. When I say you put your career at peril is because the situation Iâm painting means that you not only wonât get vital support and information to perform your job well but people can openly want you gone. Clearly, none of that inspires a desire to promote you, no matter how skilled you are. Itâs all connected, it wonât be fun and your career will crater. What Do You Do? Easy-peasy. You form good working relationships with people around you at work. This includes the boss and other people in management. Many people are too intimidated by management to feel like they can form a relationship with them. If this is you, you need to snap out of it. Management didnât instantly show up as management. They are regular people like you who simply have a different job as you. They most likely had to put in the time and demonstrate some capability so they would get promoted. To be âawe-struckâ by management does nothing for you, your career or the other person. The reason why forming good work relationships is easy is that you come in contact with a number of people routinely to get your work done. You may be so focused on your work that you ignore the few extra minutes it takes to connect at a personal level. If youâre like a lot of introverts, getting personal may have its challenges. The easiest way to start developing a relationship with a coworker is to show interest in them by asking questions. Start with the work they do and progress to interests they have outside of work. A vital part thing of getting to know the other person is to learn what is important to them professionally. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) Build Trust When you can understand where a personâs priorities are, youâre better able to support them. When you offer support to another person, it can be a gesture that will solidify your relationship and trust in you. Trust is a funny thing. For the most part, we trust each other but only up to a point. From there, our actions dictate if we endow the relationship with more or less trust. When our actions demonstrate that we have the other personâs interest in mind, the level of trust goes up. On that basis, the Office Politics is formed. We support and promote people we trust. People we trust are positioned to influence our decisions and actions. When we donât penetrate the superficial nature of simply working at someoneâs side, we donât allow trust and understanding to form. You have to dig deeper and then show the other person you understand whatâs important to them. Positive vs. Negative or Dirty Everything Iâve outlined is true no matter if the politics is positive or negative. What makes Office Politics negative is when actions and decisions are made at otherâs expense. Positive Office Politics happens when it is done for the benefit of the business and in support of others. This means that even if some people are building trust and support of one another, the influence that is transpiring may be to advance one personâs objectives while destroying another personâs in the process. It doesnât have to end up this way, but people who are jealous or competitive only see one possible outcome and that is to push back others as a means of advancing. I personally like to think that people who act like this will have karma visited upon them. It is important to note that accents are different from pronunciation. Pronunciation is the way in which a word is pronounced. Accent is a series of pronunciation, rhythm and emphasis that is local to a region or city. It is important to pronounce words correctly so that you are understandable.Accent isnt necessarily important, you can speak English with a Spanish accent for example and be totally understandable if you are pronouncing the words correctly. This accent will tell people that you are from Spain and that your first language is probably not English. If you wish for people to think that you are from the US, Canada, England, or Ireland you can try and take on an accent, however, it generally shouldnt be the most important part of your studies. Below I will go through some common mispronunciation problems that many Spanish speakers have.failure to pronounce th e end consonant accurately or strongly enough ; e.g. cart for the English word card or brish for bridge or thing for thinkproblems with the /v/ in words such as vowel or revivedifficulties in sufficiently distinguishing words such as see/she or jeep/sheep/cheapthe tendency to prefix words beginning with a consonant cluster on s- with an /e/ sound; so, for example, school becomes eschool and strip becomes estripthe swallowing of sounds in other consonant clusters; examples: next becomes nes and instead becomes istead.Below are some common emphasis problems in English.English is considered a stressed language while many other languages are considered syllabic.In other languages, such as French or Italian, each syllable receives equal importance (there is stress, but each syllable has its own length).English pronunciation focuses on specific stressed words while quickly gliding over the other, non-stressed, words.Stressed words are considered content words: Nouns e.g. kitchen, Peter ( most) principal verbs e.g. visit, construct Adjectives e.g. beautiful, interesting Adverbs e.g. often, carefullyGenerally English is spoken from the middle of the mouth and the tongue is fairly still.In English, the jaw is fairly relaxed, and the mouth is held in a medium open position.
